Inquest | 27 February 1947 (16 days after death) Former Gulgong Baker Murdered At Cessnock Police were satisfied that a son had murdered his father by shooting him at Cessnock on February 11 and then had committed suicide. Detective Sergeant G. Sutherland said last Monday. Detective - Sergeant Sutherland was giving evidence at the Cessnock Coroner's Court. The Coroner (Mr. Johnston) was inquiring into the deaths of Noel Whelan 18, and his father, Edward Whelan 51, whose bodies were found in a bakehouse in Cessnock last Tuesday morning. Both bodies had a bullet wound in the head. A .22 calibre rifle was beside the body of Noel Whelan. The Coroner found that Noel Whelan had murdered his father, and had then committed suicide. Constance Whelan, wife of Edward Whelan and mother of Noel Whelan said in evidence that she and her husband had not been on speaking terms since her discharge from Cessnock Hospital on January 8, after a confinement. Esther Shippen said in evidence that Noel Whelan had told her he had left home after his refusal to pay his board money to his father instead of to his mother. |
