Death of a paternal grandmother | Leah Harris 3 August 1935 (aged 29 years) Mrs. L. Keech. 'Nepean Times' (Penrith): A very estimable resident of Penrith, Mrs. Leah Keech, died at her home, Evans-st., Lemongrove, on Saturday, August 3, 1935,at the age of 90 years. She was born at Bristol, England, and came to Australia with her parents when she was four years of age. They went to Bathurst, and at the time of the gold rush went to the Turon diggings. Her father used to say that he and a shipmate took a quarter hundredweight of gold out of the diggings, but lost half of it in looking for another quarter. Afterwards the family removed to Kiama, and when deceased was 18 years of age, they went to Mudgee. There she was married to Henry Keech, and continued to reside there till his death 24 years ago, after which Mrs. Keech came to Penrith. She was well known in this district, and her excellent personal qualities earned for her the very highest esteem. She leaves two sons and two daughters - Mrs. H. Clark (Penrith); Walter (of Burrundulla, Mudgee); Ernest (Mayor of Wingham, and a well-known ex-resident of the Nepean district): and Clara (Penrith). There are I8 grandchildren. Mr. Josiah Harris, of Mangrove Mountain (Gosford district), is a ber of deceased. The funeral took place on Monday, August 5th, the remains being conveyed by rail to Mudgee and interred in the Methodist portion of the Mudgee general cemetery, alongside those of lier husband. Rev. P. H. Curtis conducted the service, in the presence of many mourners (Wingham Chronicle and Manning River Observer, Friday 16 August 1935, page 6). |
