Death of a father | James Vincent Nevell 26 July 1937 TURILL (From Our Representative) PASSING OF A PIONEER. A VERY sad death occurred on Sunday, July 25th, at Broughton hospital, Mudgee, when Mr. J. V. Nevell, of Elphin, Turill passed away peacefully in his sleep, at the age of 78. He was one of the oldest pioneers of the district. He had a bright, smiling, cheerful disposition and was respected by all. The remains were conveyed to the family private cemetery at Deridgerie for burial. The funeral was attended by a large crowd, many coming long distances to show their last respect. Unfortunately his wife is in hospital in Sydney and was unable to attend the funeral, which made it doubly hard for the children, the eldest being only about 17. So another of the old school was laid to rest, leaving a sorrowing wife and four children (two sons and two daughters) to mourn. Much sympathy is extended to them (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Monday 2 August 1937, page 7). DEATHS Mr. J. V. Nevell Mr. James Vincent Nevell, of "Elphin," Turill, died in a Mudgee private hospital early this morning, after a month's illness, at the age of 78. The late Mr. Nevell was born at "Deridgerie," Turill, and had spent practically the whole of his life as a grazier in that district. He spent his childhood in Mudgee, and had also lived for a time in the Rylstone district. He was well-known throughout these parts, and his passing will be the cause of very deep and widespread regret. A widow, who is ill in Sydney, and four children survive. The children are Keith, John, Ellen, and Betty (all of "Elphin"). Brothers are William (Tamworth). George ("Deridgerie"), Herbert ("Glen Lyn"), Ernest (Mudgee), and Joe (Clandulla), and sisters are Mary ("Deridgerie"), and Elizabeth ("Deridgerie"). The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at "Deridgerie," and arrangements will be in the hands of Messrs. J. C. Swords and Son (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Monday 26 July 1937, page 6). |
