PILOT OFFICER JUNGE MISSING The following wire came to Mrs. Junge (nee Joyce Long) yesterday from the Air Board, Melbourne: "Regret to inform that your husband, Pilot Officer Walter Lawrence Junge, is reported to be missing from an operational flight on 25th September, 1942. Any further information received will be immediately conveyed to you." The last cable received here was from Canada. He had been ferrying planes to Britain and on patrol work on the Nova Scotia coast. There was one very exciting incident when his plane got lost in a fog, the petrol ran out, and they all had to bale out. The latter was safely done by all. After that occasion he was cabled as "missing," and on the same day as "safe." May it be the same on this occasion. Cootamundra Herald , Tuesday 29 September 1942, p. 2. Obituary Walter Junge Gallant Kandos Officer Passes On Pilot Officer W. Junge It is with sadness writer reports the passing of Pilot Officer Walter ('Bub') Junge, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Junge, sen., of Kandos. The sad news that this gallant lad had been presumed lost has been received by his wife at Cootamundra, also by his parents. Walter Junge was the fourth of the family serving in this war. Prior to his enlistment in the R.A.A.F; he was employed by the Vacuum Oil Company at Sydney and Cootamundra. Walter Junge was as nice a lad as it has been writer's privilege to contact. He was intent on his job, and rose very rapidly in the R.A.A.F. I communicated regularly with him during his stay in Great Britain and Canada, and his letters were always bright. He, like others, was anxiously looking forward to the day when Hitler and company would be down on their knees and the boys would return home to their loved ones, but fate decided otherwise, and this brave lad, like his ber in World War No. 1, lies in a grave many miles from his native Australia. To the wife, parents and relatives the sympathy of the community goes out. Mr. and Mrs. Junge, sen., have played a large part in this and the last war in giving their sons. In the last war five sons answered the call, and the youngest, who was an officer, never returned, while another son, Jim, lost a leg. In this war the sons again heard the call, and four and a grandson enlisted early. It is a record Mr. and Mrs. Junge can justly be proud of, and their consolation is that, on both occasions, they gave their youngest son, in the cause of freedom. We are proud of you, Mr. and Mrs. Junge, and proud of your gallant son. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 3 December 1942, p. 10. Obituary Walter Junge NEWS ITEMS I have been asked by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Junge, sen., of Kandos, to express their appreciation, through these columns to the kind friends who have called and to those who have written expressing their sympathy in the sad news which they recently received. (Mr. and Mrs. Junge received the news recently that their youngest son, Pilot Officer Walter (Bub) Junge, had been presumed lost). Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 17 December 1942, p. 18. Death | 30 May 1944 DEATH Sarah Emma Junge It is with deep regret we announce the death of Mrs. Sarah Emma Junge, which took place at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Les. Halpin, Cox Street, Rylstone, on Tuesday evening of last week. Deceased, who was aged 74, came to Kandos from New Zealand in 1916, and she and her husband and family were as fine folks as ever entered this town. Speaking at the service which was held in the Presbyterian Church, Rylstone, prior to the funeral, the Rev. Conibear said: "The late Mrs. Junge was a fine wife and loving mother. She and her sons played a valiant part for their country. In the last war five sons heard their country's call, and the youngest, Lieut. Walter, paid the supreme sacrifice. Again in this war, four sons and two grandsons sailed for foreign shores to fight for justice, and again the youngest son, Pilot Officer Walter, failed to return, and lies in a watery grave. News of his death was too much of a blow for this loving mother, and her health gradually failed until God called her home." It was writer's privilege to be a very close friend of the late Mrs. Junge, and she was as dear a lady as one would ever wish to meet. I am now sure she is happy with the sons who predeceased her. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place to the Presbyterian portion of the Rylstone Cemetery on Thursday last, the last sad rites being performed by the Rev. E. G. Conibear. Deceased is survived by a sorrowing husband, five sons, Bill, Jim, Charlie (returned), all of Kandos, Lou (American Navy), Emmet (A.I.F.) and the daughter, Mrs Les. Halpin (Rylstone). To them we extend our deepest sympathy (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 1 June 1944, page 10). |
