Obituary

Death of Mr. Byfield

A man who was known by everyone not only in the Gulgong and Mudgee district but in a big area, as “Happy” Byfield, died this morning at the Gulgong District Hospital after a long illness. His name was Henry Albert, but he was “Hap” or “Happy” to young and old. He had a lifelong association with music, dance-bands and management of the picture show at Gulgong for scores of years. His funeral will take place after a service at the Gulgong Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Mr. Byfield followed in his father’s footsteps and conducted a taxi service for many years and succeeded as projectionist for the silent movies, and later the talkies and was manager of the old “Roxy Theatre” in the heyday of Hollywood films. Last year as every year he played at the annual St. Patrick’s Day concert for all Hallows School and was always willing and contributed to the music life of the town and district as a drummer and trumpet player. By a coincidence there is no “Paddy’s Day” celebration in Gulgong on Thursday. A tribute was made to the work of Mr. Byfield, as Manager of the Opera House Cinema by the President of the Gulgong Musical and Dramatic Society, Mr. F. Halloran, at the recent annual meeting. Mr. Byfield is survived by his wife, Ruby and daughters, Marie, (Mrs. Chalker, Mittagong) and Jeanette (Mrs. C. Phillips, Gulgong) and his grandchildren.
