OBITUARY

Mr. M. A. Deutscher Wonderful Career MR. Alexander Michael Deutscher, brother of Mr. L. A. Deutscher, "New Park," Birriwa, who died at Charleville last month after a wonderful career - he was a director of the Queensland Primary Producers' Co-operative Association, a Shire councillor for 26 years, a trustee of the show society and racecourse, president of the Warrego Pastoral and Agricultural Association and an active member of every movement for the progress of Charleville and district - left a niche that will be hard to fill. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. The late Mr. Deutscher, of whom the chairman of the Charleville Hospital Board (Mr. C. R. Noyes), when requesting members at a board meeting to stand and observe one minute's silence in his memory, referred to as a man who bore a wonderful character, was a good Christian, devoted husband, loving father, true friend and worthy citizen, was born at Hamilton, Victoria, going to Charleville in 1908. The late Mr. Deutscher first started as a grazier, later disposing of his holding to his son. Mr. Deutscher then purchased another holding and area, conducting both as the one property. Thoroughly practical and unafraid of hard work (says the "Charleville Times"), he made excellent progress in the grazing world. With the late Mrs. Deutscher, he took up residence at "Temora," named after the New South Wales town, in which his younger days were spent. Prominent in Public Affairs Every movement for progress in Charleville and district had the whole-hearted sympathy and support of the late Mr. Deutscher and he played a prominent part in public affairs. For 26 years he occupied a seat on Murweh Shire Council. Not a boisterous orator, what he had to say was always direct and to the point, based on practical knowledge. He had both the admiration and respect of the fellow councilors. He was also alderman but preferred to serve the interests of the ratepayers in the shire rather than the town, and one term was sufficient experience for him. As a trustee of the show and racecourse he took great pride in advancing the appearance of the reserve. He was also a trustee of the Gowrie Recreation Reserve until this year, when the control was handed over to the town council. President of the Central Warrego Pastoral and Agricultural Association, the late Mr. Deutscher's personal zeal and energy played no unimportant part in the success of Charleville Shows of recent years. He was unopposed when re-elected at the recent annual meeting, members expressing the utmost confidence in the retiring president to carry but efficiently the duties placed upon him. A committee member of the Warrego Racing Club, he took an active interest in the working of the club, and raced several horses; he was also a member of the Charleville Picnic Racing Club, and generally had a grass-fed performer competing at the club's annual meeting. He was a foundation member of the Warrego Club, Charleville, and was this year appointed president. He was also a foundation member of Queensland Primary Producers' Co operative Association. An enthusiastic supporter of the Charleville Ambulance, the late Mr. Deutscher was appointed vice-president some 18 years ago, and also occupied the position, executive representative for 14 years. The funeral left the Charleville Church of England to the Charleville Railway Station, where the body was placed on the mail train for Brisbane, where it was cremated. Ten children and 18 grandchildren survive the late Mr. Deutscher. The late Mrs. Deutscher predeceased her husband some seven months ago. Mr. Deutscher was 71. "Ill Afford His Loss" We have had man fine citizens of Charleville, but I am certain that very few citizens have done as much for this community or bore such an honored or respected name as that of Mr. Deutscher," Mr. Noyes, chairman of the Charleville Hospital Board, said at a meeting following Mr. Deutscher's death. Mr. Noyes referred feelingly to the splendid work of the deceased, and concluded; "Charleville will miss the late Mr. Deutscher, and it will take more than one man to fill the places he occupied in this community; we can ill afford his loss." Members stood and observed one minute's silence as a last tribute to the deceased gentleman.
