Death of a brother | Joseph Henry Haley 24 December 1957 (aged 62 years) Death Notice The death occurred suddenly at his home at Mebul on December 24, of Mr. Joseph Henry Haley, a pioneer of the district, aged 82 years. Deceased is survived by a widow and family, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. The funeral took place to the Church of England portion of the Gulgong cemetery on December 26, Rev. J. Woodhouse performing the last sad rites. The arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Eastaugh and Carroll. Death Mr. J. H. Haley One who belonged to the sturdy pioneer class, Mr. Joseph Henry Haley, collapsed after a heart seizure and died immediately near his residence on his property at Mebul late on Christmas Eve. Deceased was born at Cullen Bullen 82 years ago. At a very early age he came to the Gulgong district, where his parents (the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Haley acquired land in the area now known as “Rollsville,” Tallawang road, and later at Mebul and that part of Goodiman Gap known as “The Springs” - the latter now owned by Mr. C. Niven. Deceased selected the area on which he had resided for very many years past at Mebul, 14 miles from Gulgong, and on which his family was reared. In Gulgong he was married to Miss Hester Honeysett, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Honeysett, of Tallawang. Mrs. Haley has been a patient in Prince Henry Hospital for the past three months with a broken thigh-having also been a patient in Gloucester House, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital seven years ago with the other thigh broken. The late “Joe” Haley, as he was so fondly called by those who knew him, was a good all round sport in his younger days, having been a keen cricketer, and noted rifle and gun shooter. In those times pigeon shooting and hare and kangaroo drives interested most landholders, who would form parties and in one “drive” shoot down hundreds of hares, which were more numerous than rabbits. Joe Haley would bag as many or more than most of the others and in target shooting he was often a “first” or a runner-up. Only six months ago without the aid of spectacles, he shot 2 hares as dusk was approaching. He was also a noted blade shearer. Deceased took a keen interest in his earlier days in the annual Shows in Gulgong, Mudgee, Dunedoo and Mendooran, being a noted exhibitor of agricultural products. Apart from having grown peanuts, sorghum and other products of the soil. He grew experimental plots of wheat, oats, barley, millet and cotton from Government supplied seeds. His knowledge of fruit trees was above the ordinary: the grafting of various trees often engaged his attention. The late Mr. Haley was a fine example of what a good father and a good citizen should be and at all times was a kindly soul and a good friend-one who was a good man to know. Deceased is survived by his wife and the following family: Messrs. Leo Haley (Mebul and Gulgong), Norman Haley (Narrabri), Mesdames. W. (Cecilia) Spicer, of Lidcombe; E. (Rose) Mitchell, of Punchbowl; T. H. (Daisy) Lee, Gulgong; and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren, to all of whom sincere sympathy is extended. A daughter, Mrs. R (Gladys) Spanes died at sea when returning from overseas in 1944. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Messrs. Walter Haley (Gulgong), James Haley (Goodiman and Gulgong), Frank Haley (Lithgow), Mesdames. E. Honeysett (Lithgow), J. McDonald (Dulwich Hill), T. Cameron (Dulwich Hill), A. Talbot (Mudgee). After a service in St. Luke’s Church of England, the funeral took place on Boxing Day to the Church of England portion of the Gulgong Cemetery. |
