Death of a paternal grandmother | Mary Marice Ashton October 6, 1934 (aged 34 years) DEATHS Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald THE death occurred at her residence at Leichhardt on Friday of Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald, formerly a very well known resident of Uarbry, at the age of 88. The late Mrs. Fitzgerald, who was the widow of Mr. James Fitzgerald, was born at Blackheath, but had resided at Uarbry for the greater part of her life. She left the Mudgee district for the city some years ago. She visited this town a few months ago, when she stayed with her son Gerald, of Mortimer street. Four sons and one daughter survive. The funeral took place to the Roman Catholic cemetery at Uarbry yesterday afternoon, the remains having been brought to Mudgee by Saturday's train. The funeral was preceded by a service, conducted by Monsignor Flanagan, at the Mudgee Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Father Curran, of Dunedoo, conducted the rites at the graveside. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs J. C. Swords and Son. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 8 October 1934, p. 4. Obituary Mary Fitzgerald DEATH THE death of Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald took place in Sydney on 6th instant. She was buried in the R.C. portion of Uarbry cemetery. She was an old identity of Uarbry, where she reared a family of five sons and two daughters. (Further particulars are published under Cassilis news.- Ed., G.). Mudgee Guardian, Monday 15 October 1934, p. 2. Death Mary Fitzgerald DEATH OF AN OLD IDENTITY ON Sunday, 7th inst., near the scenes of her early childhood days, the remains of an old identity, in the person of Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald, were laid to rest, having been brought from Sydney, where she passed away. The late Mrs. Fitzgerald was born at Blackheath 89 years ago, and she removed at an early age to Uarbry, where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ashton, kept a hotel. After such a long span it is unique that she should have been laid to rest in the Uarbry cemetery, only a short distance from the site of the old hotel. Her husband, the late Jas. Fitzgerald, predeceased her by 28 years. For many years she and her husband lived in the Cassilis district, where they reared a large family, all of whom are well known and highly respected in the district. Those living are Cr T. Houlahan (Curryall), Gerald and James Fitzgerald (Mudgee), Alfred (Duncdoo) and Mrs. Paton (Leichhardt). The large gathering at her graveside from all parts of the district bore striking testimony to the respect and esteem with which she was regarded. We extend to the bereaved family our deepest sympathy in their great loss. Mrs. H. McMahon, of Cassilis, is the only remaining sister. Mudgee Guardian, Monday 15 October 1934, p. 6.
