Death of a maternal grandfather | John Archibald Campbell 4 August 1901 (aged 18 years) Age: 73 Headstone reads: In loving memory of my dear husband John Archibald Campbell Who departed this life 4th August 1901 Aged 73 years [With Maria Campbell, Elizabeth Campbell, and Louisa Mary Carr]. GULGONG NEWS. (From Our Correspondent.) DEATH OF MR. J. A. CAMPBELL. "A good husband and a good father has gone to his reward " were the words expressed when the death of Mr. J. A. Campbell, of Slapdash, was announced on Sunday last. The late gentleman was born at Edinburgh, Scotland, 73 years ago, so at his death had attained a ripe old age. He came to the colony 63 years ago, and in 1876 took up land on Slapdash Creek, where he has resided ever since. Some eighteen months ago he took ill, and despite medical skill and most attentive nursing, gradually grew worse. On Saturday his family knew the last hours were near at hand, but he lingered on, conscious to the last, till Sunday at noon, when, surrounded by his four sons, seven daughters and wife, he passed away to the Great Beyond. The late Mr. Campbell took a keen interest in politics, and it was a pleasure to converse with him on the main topics of the day. His family is one of the most respectable in the district, and they have the sympathy of all who know them. The Rev. A. J. Doig performed the last sad rites at the grave. The funeral was one of the largest seen in Gulgong for many years. The deceased was a son of the late Dr. John A. Campbell, a one time well-known physician and surgeon in Sydney, being well known and respected in the fifties. All readers of the Guardian who know the late Mr. Campbell, of Slapdash, must be sorry to hear of his demise. Peace to his ashes. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 8 August 1901, p. 14.
