Death of a maternal grandmother | Louisa Stonham 14 February 1937 (aged 0) PIONEER'S DEATH Deep regret was caused throughout the Turill district by the death of Mrs Louisa Capon (75) widow of the late Mr W. A. Capon, who came to Turill nearly 40 years ago as teacher. The rough slab building called a school then stood about four miles off the main road, surrounded by thick bush and scrub between Turill and Uarbry. The pay was bad and the living conditions were awful. Many a time I have heard Mrs Capon say how frightened she was while waiting in their little "wooden hut" for her husband, who had ridden into Cassilis, some ten miles, on horse-back for his pay, which he had to do every Saturday. When the Government built the Turill school-room Mr Capon was put in charge. While he taught the children to read and write Mrs Capon taught the girls to sew. Many people will find it hard to believe that at one time there were over fifty children attending school at Turill. It was many years before the pay was raised to a reasonable living wage. Mr and Mrs Capon were at the Turill school for over twenty years. They were liked and respected by everybody. Well I remember my first visit to them (a perfect stranger and very sick). At 6 p.m. I was introduced to a pile of blankets and a hot lemon drink with a strong dash of whisky in it (I was only staying one night). Shortly after my first visit Mr Capon retired at the age of 65. Some twelve months after I was again a visitor at Turill; this time, both my husband and I had to make a stay of six weeks (on business), but one could not wish for a more considerate host and hostess. Miss Ivy Capon (now Mrs Lionel Butler, of Mudgee) was my constant companion for that six weeks (we are still the best of friends), and my husband and Mr Capon were almost inseparable. From Mrs Capon we received the very essence of kindness. During the whole six weeks I did not see a cross look or hear an angry word. No wonder they were loved and respected by everyone. Mrs Capon was anxious to get to Sydney among her children, but Mr Capon preferred to cling to the old home. They had done their duty and earned their freedom. The number of school teachers turned out from Turill school, I believe, was far above the record for any village school. At the farewell social held at their home there were not only presentations made to Mr and Mrs Capon, but also to each one of their daughters, which again shows the respect in which they were held. They left for Sydney to enjoy their well earned freedom until the last chapter of life carried them off. So we take off our hats off to the pioneers of education at Turill (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Monday 1 March 1937, page 6).
