Mr. F. R. Tomlinson

Although he had been ill for over 12 months, the death at his home in Mayne Street at 6 p.m. on April 7, of Mr. Francis Roland Tomlinson, came as a shock to his relatives and friends. Deceased, aged 61 years, was born in Gulgong and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Tomlinson of Queen Street. He had spent almost five months at intervals in a hospital and deceased had not actively conducted his trade as a building contractor for some ? months. He had a reputation of being a capable tradesman and successful carpentry business. His first job after leaving school was at the timber yard at Jas. Loneragans, Gulgong Pty. Ltd. After a time he went to Sydney and took up carpentry work on various parts of the State for the Department of Education. He also worked for a big building firm at Leura and for his father who retired from the building trade some years ago. As a builder the late Mr. Tomlinson was well known and highly respected in the Mudgee, Gulgong, Dunedoo and surrounding districts. Frederick Tomlinson

With the passing of Frederick Robert Tomlinson, aged almost 90 on Tuesday, December 18, at Tea Gardens, Gulgong has lost one of its oldest and most respected citizens. With him goes much of the history of this town, as Frederick Tomlinson, born in London in 1873 came to Gulgong as a young man, and spent the rest of his life here. His uncle was living in Sydney and he came out to Australia to visit him. He then came to Gulgong when he was about 18 years of age when the gold mining was still at its height. He took out a ticket for steam engine driving and so stayed on working in the various mines, Frederick Tomlinson married Mercy Hasenkam when he was 26 years old. Mrs. Tomlinson is a member of another pioneering family whose name is also known throughout the district. After working in mines at Leadville and Hill End, Mr. Tomlinson became a building contractor in 1916 and was responsible for building a great number of houses throughout the town and district. The old open air theatre, the “Lyric”, was also built by him. Mr. Tomlinson gave many years service in the Gulgong Municipal Council while Mr. A. Baldwin was Mayor, and was greatly interested in all the affairs of the town right until his death. He was also a staunch supporter of the Country Party And spent much time in its cause at election time. It was a familiar sight to see him taking his daily walk down town stopping every now and then to chat with his many friends on the way. Frederick Tomlinson was cremated at Beresfield, Newcastle, on Thursday, December 30 after a service conducted by the Presbyterian Minister, Mr. Ppeffer. He is survived by his widow, Mercy, and two sons, Eric “Little Thornbury”, Gulgong and Trevor, Picnic Point, and two daughters, Clarice (Mrs. Stan Hawkins, Katoomba), Esther, (Mrs. Horace Motum, Tea Gardens).
