Death of a maternal grandfather | Charles Gentle 10 September 1924 Age: 81 Mudgee Pioneer Passes. MR. CHARLES GENTLE. By the death of Charles Gentle, which took place at his home in Gladstone-street, Mudgee, yesterday morning, Mudgee loses one of its oldest pioneers, and at the same time a well known resident. Mr. Gentle, who had reached the age of 81 years, has been a resident of Mudgee for over 60 years. He has enjoyed good health up till about six months ago, when he began to fail. For many years he followed farming pursuits, but leaving the land he conducted the North Shore Hotel, Mudgee, and afterwards, became proprietor of the now defunct West End cordial factory. There are also thirty grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The deceased in his day was a fine old political fighter, and was solidly behind the free trade banner, always working hard for his men. He was also a good sport and a fine cricketer. He was greatly respected by a wide circle of friends, and was in fact one of the best-known men in the district. He was buried in the Church of England portion of the Mudgee cemetery this afternoon. The Rev. Canon Parr read the burial service, while Mr. J. C. Swords conducted the funeral. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 11 September 1924, p. 24. Charles Gentle Obituary |

Death of a brother | Reginald Harold Menchin 20 February 1967 Age: 71 Obituary Mr. Reginald Harold Menchin, who passed away suddenly at his home recently, aged 71, was the oldest resident of that area. Although he had not enjoyed good health for a number of years, Mr. Menchin's death was quite unexpected and came as a great shock to his relatives and friends. He is survived by his wife Lila, and a family of six sons and three daughters, Reg (Blacktown), Melba (Mrs. Waller, Panania), Dud (Wilbertree), Pearl (Mrs. Hair, Orange), Ray (Mudgee), Jack (McDonald's Creek), Ross (Fairfield), Shirley (Mrs. Lynch, Mudgee), Ron (Wilbertree) and bers Les and Bruce and sisters Vina (Mrs. Fearn), Alice (Mrs. Randall) and Hilda (Mrs. Bryant), all of Sydney. All attended the funeral, which left St. John's Church of England for the Mudgee Cemetery. Sons Dud and Ross, and bers Les and Bruce, acted as pallbearers both at the Church and graveside. Born at Putta Bucca in 1895, Mr. Menchin, a member of a large family, went to live at Wilbertree at the age of five and spent the rest of his life there. ?? years he took over the farming interests from his late father, and carried on dairying for a time, but eventually switched to lucerne and maize growing. In the early 1940s he pioneered the irrigation of the lucerne flats at Wilbertree. In 1951 and 1952 he won both the local and inland competitions with his maize crops. In later years, although failing in health, his love of farm life and the land in general caused him to carry on his farming activities almost single handed. On the morning of his death, he was preparing to carry out his usual tasks of haymaking and irrigating when he was struck by a sudden heart attack which caused his death. Mr. Menchin seemed to be gifted with the knowledge of farming and the condition in which he kept his farm earned him the highest praise from his many friends. In actual fact it could be said that he was never really happy unless he was working. In the sporting field, Mr. Menchin, in earlier years, was a keen cyclist and cricketer, an excellent marksman at the Mudgee rifle range, and a member of the Mudgee Coursing Club. He enjoyed moderate success with his greyhounds. In later years his interest centred on following football and cricket in the Mudgee district. Mr. Menchin enjoyed the simple things in life, and was always ready to help those in need. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Mudgee Guardian, Friday 10 March 1967, p. 2. Obituary Reginald Harold Menchin Return Thanks Mrs. L. Menchin and Family wish to sincerely thank all kind relatives and friends for floral tributes, cards and expressions of sympathy in the loss of a dear husband and father. Would all please accept this as our personal thanks. Mudgee Guardian, Friday 10 March 1967, p. 2. Return Thanks Mrs L Menchin |
