ACCIDENTAL DEATH.- The District Coroner (Mr. R. Laing) conducted an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Justin Menchin, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Menchin, of Gulgong, who was found drowned on July 1. The Coroner found that death was caused by asphyxia from drowning, caused by accidentally falling in a tank. Mudgee Guardian, Wednesday 9 July 1930, p.13. Death, Justin Menchin

Note: CHILD DROWNED

CHILD DROWNED SAD DEATH AT GULGONG On July 1, a very sad death occurred at Gulgong, when Mr and Mrs Fred. Menchin lost their beautiful child Justin, aged 1 year 9 months. The bonnie little chap was playing as usual in the garden at his home, when he evidently climbed up on a small open tank containing about 15 inches of water, and overbalancing, fell into the water and was drowned. Drs. Allport and Tunley and also the nursing staff of a private hospital nearby were quickly on the spot, and though they worked hard for some considerable time - effort to restore life failed. The little spirit had fled. A great gloom fell over the town and district of Gulgong, when the sad news was circulated, and the expressions of sympathy which came from far and near, to the grief-stricken parents, testified to the high esteem in which they are held. The funeral, which was very largely attended, moved from the parents' residence the following day, and after a short service, conducted by the Rev. Father Brosnan, at the Catholic Church, proceeded to the local cemetery. Beautiful floral tributes covered the coffin, and a quiet sadness seemed to pervade as the procession moved along. The Rev. Fathers Brosnan and Coughlan conducted the service at the grave. On Sunday last at Mass the Rev. Father Brosnan made touching reference to the sad event. Mr R. Bayliss conducted the funeral arrangements. Mudgee Guardian, Friday 11 July 1930, p. 11. Justin Menchin Obituary

GULGONG DISTRICT NEWS

DEATH Mr. E. Canobi Mr. Everisto ("Chris.") Canobi, of "Braymont," Gulgong, died in the Gulgong District Hospital on September 14, after a brief illness, aged 64 years. Deceased was a well-known farmer of this district. He was born at Lombardy (Italy) near the Switzerland border, and was only three years of age when he came to Australia with his parents, who after residing in the Gosford area for a few years, settled on the land in the Gulgong district Deceased attended the Wyaldra Public School, which was closed many years ago. After leaving school, the late Mr. Canobi worked with his father on a steam traction engine and thrashing plant, and later, on a chaff-cutter. He resided at "Braymont" for about 36 years and until his health began to fail, was a hard worker. Deceased was a man with many friends and will be greatly missed from the community. Although he did not take an active part in public life, he showed a keen interest, through the newspapers and in conversation with friends, in all matters, including politics. In referring to his sterling character, a citizen stated recently that he had never heard "Chris." Canobi speak ill of anyone. He was a man who loved his home and family, and his adherence to the Christian way of life was manifest in his every dealing. Mrs. Canobi and three grown-up sons, Jack and Victor ("Braymont") and Cecil (Home Rule) survive, to all of whom the profound sympathy of very many friends will be extended. Mrs. F. Menchin, of Gulgong, is a sister. The funeral took place to the Roman Catholic portion of the Gulgong cemetery, the Rev. Father Scanlon officiating. Arrangements were carried out by Mr. D. Whale (Gulgong Motor Funerals). Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 25 September 1947, p. 16. Everisto Canobi Obituary

Note: Sudden Death Mr. Fred Menchin

Sudden Death Mr. Fred Menchin Mr. John Joseph Frederick Menchin, aged 73 years, died at his residence, Bowman Street, on the Saturday afternoon before last. Due to a heart attack, his passing shocked townspeople and district residents alike. Deceased was a native of Mudgee, but spent the greater part of his life in Gulgong. For very many years, until his retirement some 12 years ago, “Fred” as he was familiarly called was employed by Spears' bakery and was well known in and around the town as a bread carter for the firm. His familiar figure will be much missed. His keen sense of humor and qualities made him a lovable character. He took a keen interest in sport, especially football, and was a vice-president of the now defunct Coursing Club. The late Mr. Menchin is survived by his wife and the following grown-up sons: Ald. Trevor Menchin (Orange); Messrs. Noel Menchin (Lithgow) and Douglas Menchin (Boggabri). The funeral took place to the Church of England portion of the Gulgong cemetery on Saturday afternoon, Rev. S. Carr officiating. Our sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones. Mudgee Guardian, Thursday 20 December 1951, p. 15. John J Menchin Obituary

Note: Centenary for Gulgong lass

Centenary for Gulgong lass Mrs. Elizabeth Menchin’s one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet, self-effacing yet assertive, she can no longer see but at 100 years of age as of last Saturday, she has tremendous strength of spirit. A resident of Gulgong all her life, Mrs. Menchin has seen many changes, especially in the last twenty years, and many personalities come and go. Though she wasn’t giving much away to the media, to meet her was like linking into 100 years of Australian history. Born in Gosford of a young Italian catholic couple who had migrated to Australia in the late 1880s, Mrs. Menchin’s mother died when she was a young child, and her father remarried and bought some land at Wyaldra Creek near Gulgong. Mrs. Menchin’s stepmother raised her in a strict Catholic environment. Elizabeth remained a strong catholic all her life. She worked for both the Stan and Ernest Rouse families in their homes for a time. She’d been living at her home in Gulgong until her recent move to Pioneer House. Elizabeth had outlived her husband and three of her four sons with the remaining son, Noel living in Gulgong. She joined a special club on Saturday when she celebrated her 100th birthday. She became a Centenarian - one of the 380 Centenarians registered with the Australian Bicentennial Authority’s Programme for Older Australians. As a Centenarian she received a special gift folder from the Bicentennial Authority for her birthday. A certificate from the Governor-General and a letter of congratulations from the Chairman of the Authority, Mr. Jim Kirk, AC, was sent to Mrs. Menchin along with a congratulatory message from the Queen. Copies of the Mudgee Guardian, with this item in it about the Gulgong Pioneers’ Museum, will be heading overseas. One will go to Italy and the other to Switzerland. This follows the visit by Italian and Swiss citizens to the town. Museum publicity officer, Helen McNulty said that it was always a pleasure to see visitors from other countries coming to see the Museum and last week was no exception. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Atkins of Dubbo, have been hosts of Italian student, Piergiorio Luongo, who was delighted to find an Italian flag on display. Mudgee Guardian, Tuesday 13 September 1988, p. 20.
