Killed were Edwin (Ted) Herbert Raisin 55 of Medley Street, Gulgong; Sonia Mary Gavin, 35 of Herbert Street, Gulgong and Doy Ethel Menchin, 64 of 'Birdsgarden', Gulgong, Mrs. Gavin was a daughter of Mrs. Menchin's. Mr. Raisin was in a Holden utility and heading towards Gulgong. The other vehicle was travelling towards Mudgee and driven by Mrs. Gavin. It was a light Mazda tabletop truck. Mrs. Menchin was a passenger in her daughter's vehicle. A motorist who came on the scene shortly after the accident on his way to Mudgee, notified the police. Ambulance and police together with the Mudgee Search and Rescue Squad arrived on the scene in quick time. The road was closed for over an hour while the victims were released from the badly crumpled vehicles. Messages came over the radio advising motorists to take alternative routes between Mudgee and Gulgong. Police are continuing their investigations but because of the absence of any witnesses to the collision they are not able to express an opinion as to a possible cause of the collision. The matter has since been referred to the coroner. An inquest may be held at a later date. As can be seen in the photographs, both vehicles were very extensively damaged.
