Death of a maternal grandmother | Fanny Willis 14 April 1920 (aged 6 years) Death at Ulan. MRS. FANNY PHILLIPS. The death occurred at her daughter's residence, Mrs. William Archer, Ulan, yesterday, of Mrs. Fanny Phillips, widow of the late Mr. John Phillips, of Wollar. The deceased lady, who was 85 years of age, had been a resident of Wollar for a great number of years, and was highly respected and esteemed throughout the district. She was of a kind and charitable disposition. Mrs. Phillips is survived by the following children: Mrs. Menchin (Mudgee), Mrs. Parkins (Cobbora), Mrs. Robert Archer (Wentworthville), Mrs. Hayden (Ulan), Mrs. William Archer (Ulan), Mrs. Thos. Archer (Dubbo), Mrs. George Barton (Wentworthville), Mrs. Edward Barton (Combo, Wollar), Mrs. Albert Bailey (Murragamba), and Messrs. Thomas Phillips (Binnaway), John Phillips (Dubbo), and William Phillips (Cobbora). She is also survived by a great number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. The remains will be interred in the Church of England portion of the Wollar cemetery tomorrow. The Rev. Canon Dunstan will officiate at the graveside. |

Death of a father | Henry James Hayden 28 April 1939 (aged 25 years) Age: 65 DEATH Mr. H. J. Hayden THE death occurred on Friday last of Mr Henry James Hayden, one of the most widely known and highly respected residents of Ulan, aged 65 years. Deceased was associated with the district for practically a lifetime, and his sterling qualities won for him the love and esteem of all classes of the community. He is survived by a widow and family, to whom sincere sympathy will be extended. The funeral, which was one of the largest ever seen at Ulan, took place to the Church of England portion of the cemetery on Saturday afternoon, the Rev. L. V. Caldwell, of Gulgong, performing the last sad rites at the graveside. Messrs J. C. Divorce | Frederick James Dowel — View this family 24 August 1947 (aged 33 years) This marriage was wrecked by grog Even on the day his only child was christened Frederick James Dowel spent most of his time at a pub and came home cranky with the grog. hat was one of the reasons why his wife, Florence Ellen Dowel, had to leave him. She told the story in the Divorce Court this week. Dowel lives in Market Street, Mudgee. His wife's present address is Canterbury Road, Hurlstone Park. They were married on January 19, 1935. He was 22, she was 20. From the beginning of their married life at Mudgee her husband drank heavily, Mrs. Dowel declared. She said: "He even went back to the hotel to drink after tea." Mr. Justice Edwards: "But hotels close at 6 p.m." Mrs. Dowe: "He was friendly with a publican." Because of her nervous state, induced by her husband's behavior, she badly needed a holiday, she said. When she announced that to her husband he took an axe in his hand and threatened: "If you leave here I'll knock your brains out." "He also said he would put poison in the baby's bottle," Mrs. Dowel declared. For her, a decree nisi on the ground of constructive desertion (Daily Telegraph, Sunday 24 August 1947, page 32). |

Her husband, Henry, predeceased her, while children Ethel, May, Reg., Delma, Doris, Mildred, Phil, Edith, Ted and Florence survive. Death of a brother | Phillip Henry Hayden 1986 (aged 72 years) Round-A-Bout With Belle The death has occurred of a very highly respected citizen, Mr. Phillip Henry Hayden of Mortimer Street, Mudgee. Aged seventy-eight, he was born at Ulan, one of a large family, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hayden, pioneers of the Ulan area. Phil, as he was known, spent his early life at Ulan, later he moved to Pyramul, then Mudgee where he has lived for many years. He was a rural worker, a good shearer, did most kinds of rural work, and was popular with his work mates. In retirement Phil has been a keen gardener. He was a sincere, unassuming, honest man, a supporter of his church, and helpful to others, a loving and caring husband, father, grand and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife Nita, who was the former Nita Leven, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry Leven (senr.) of “Moolarben”, Cook’s Gap, and formerly of Meroo; and three daughters, June (Mrs. Tom Emery), Norma (Mrs. L. Williams) and Peggie (Mrs. Redfern), their husbands, a number of grand and great grandchildren, also one ber Cyril (Ted) Hayden, and eight sisters. Mrs. Ethel King, Mrs. Dot Carlisle, and Mrs. Edith Partridge are three who live in the Mudgee area, he was predeceased by his ber Reg, and his sister, May (Mrs. Love). The funeral service which was held in the Uniting Church, Mudgee, at 3 pm on May 19, was conducted by the Reverend Phillip Kellaway, and assisted by Phillip Emery, who paid a fitting tribute to his grandfather, Phil Hayden. Death of a sister | Doris Annie Hayden 19 September 1990 (aged 76 years) Obituary Doris Annie Carlisle Doris Annie Carlisle (nee Hayden), passed away suddenly at her home in Mudgee on September 19, aged 86 years. She was born in Gulgong and was one of a family of 10. Most of her life was spent in the Ulan-Mudgee district on the land. She was predeceased by her husband Cecil Edgar Carlisle 13 years ago. She is survived by her family of 3 sons Clive (Sydney), Trevor (Sydney), John (Wodonga, Vic.), and 1 daughter Joy Gilmore (Sydney); sisters Ethel King (Mudgee), Mildred Harvey (Leeton), Florence Wade (Gosford) and ber Ted (Gosford). She was predeceased by sisters, May Love, Delma Cooke, Edith Partridge and bers Reg and Phill.
